Richard Buckminster “Bucky” Fuller was an American architect, systems theorist, author, designer, and inventor.
Fuller published more than 30 books, coining or popularizing terms such as “Spaceship Earth”, ephemeralization, and synergetic. He also developed numerous inventions, mainly architectural designs, and popularized the widely known geodesic dome. Carbon molecules known as fullerenes were later named by scientists for their structural and mathematical resemblance to geodesic spheres.
Fuller attended Milton Academy in Massachusetts, and after that began studying at Harvard University, where he was affiliated and expelled from college for excessively socializing and missing his midterm exams.
His business attempts also failed. Lost his job and was unemployed. The birth of their daughter Allegra in 1927 also added to their financial challenges.
Fuller was drinking heavily and reflecting upon the solution to his family’s struggles on long walks around Chicago and contemplated suicide, so that his family could benefit from a life insurance payment.
It was an overpowering moment. He felt a rush of awe as he saw the starry Heavens and the thought seared his mind.
“You do not have the right to eliminate yourself. He does not belong to you.”
Fuller walked away and started all over again.
From that point on, he embarked on a journey that led him into careers as an inventor, engineer, mathematician, architect, poet, and cosmologist.
He eventually won dozens of honorary degrees and Nobel Prize nomination. Fuller wrote dozen of books, circled the globe 57 times, and told millions about his dreams for the future.
The inventor of the geodesic dome, he seldom repeated himself in lectures that sometimes lasted three to four hours on topics that ranged from education to the origin of life.
The day Buckminister Fuller encountered hope was the day he began to find meaning for his life.
My beloved people, there is always a reason to hope. Hope gives us the strength to walk from failure and move on to success.
Never lose hope because hope is the only universal liar who never loses his reputation for veracity.
You’ve got to have hope. Without hope life is meaningless. And once you choose hope, anything is possible.
you will succeed as long as you have hope because hope is the key to success.
